Getting started with Neopets

I intend to use this blog to create a guide for playing the online virtual pets game Neopets.

The first thing you need to do is open an account with Neopets. Click on "sign up" on the Neopets home page to begin. You will not be able to change your user name once after you create your account, so choose something that you like. You also won't be able to change your pets' names, so choose wisely. If you need help coming up with some unusual names, try these web sites:
seventhsanctum.com or The Baby Name Inventor.

Keep in mind that a name like Annastonia sounds much nice and looks neater than a name like xbaby_gurl_12_12_12x. If the name you want isn't available, consider change the vowels (Annistonia instead of Annastonia) or doubling the consonants (Annastonnia instead of Annastonia).

Another thing to think about when creating your pets, is that you cannot easily change your pets' color or species (although there are exceptions to this rule.) It may take you months to earn the items necessary to change your pet, so make sure that you are satisfied with your pet before you proceed.

Important: Never give out your password to ANYONE! Neopets won't send you an email asking for it.

I have now created an account with the user name XippieHippy and my pet is a blue Uni named Annastonia. I have 250 np.

When you open a new account you have 250 Neopoints (np). Click on "Shops" on the left sidebar and then click on "Your Items", which is the first icon on the scroll-like horizontal bar at the top. Here you can get your "Newbie Pack". You will receive eight items, 4 which cannot sold or traded.

To start earning more Neopoints you will want to open a shop. Click on the second button on the scroll-like horizontal bar at the top. Click "Create/Edit a Shop". You will need to choose a name for your shop which can be changed later. You need to enter a description which can also be changed. For now, you can keep this simple by typing something like "My Shop" and "Please buy something from my shop" in these spaces. Click on the "Create Shop" button at the bottom. Now you need to obtain the items you will sell in your shop.

I have 100 np and a shop that will hold 5 items. Since I need to fill up my shop with only 100 np, I can spend about 20 np on each item.

An excellent web site to use when stocking your shop is Neoitems.net. You will need to sign up to use this web site, but it is free and I highly recommend it. Once you have logged in, you can use the Neopets database to sort items by their approximate price.

Back at Neopets.com, use the shop wizard to find the items you want to buy. Click on shops, the the blue pointed hat on the horizontal bar. I will go in to more detail about the shop wizard later. For now, type in (or copy and paste) the item that you want to buy. You will want to choose "identical to my phrase" in the drop down box, so the shop wizard will find the item that you want. Buy from the shops that have the lowest prices. You can buy five different items or 5 of the same items or any combination there of. I like to keep track of how much I pay for each item.

I have 5 pyramidcake which cost 1-12 np each. I have 57 np.

Once you have the items you want to sell in your shop, click on shops and then the "your shop" icon. Click on "quick stock". Select the items you want to sell (up to 5) and hit the submit button at the bottom of the page. Now click on "shop stock". Decide how much you want to sell the items for. As a rule, you should sell items for at least 10% more than you paid for them. So, if you paid 100 np for an item, you would want to sell it for atleast 110 np.

I am selling the pyramidcake for 20 mp each.

Now it's time to wait for someone to buy from your shop. This can take a while. You can lower your prices to sell your items faster, but remember not to sell the items for less than you paid for them.
